Cool crap of the week

No major distro drops this week. I was fortunate enough for a lifelong friend to come into town for drinks on Monday, and I had tickets to a networking event in a party suite at the Orioles game on Tuesday, which really cut into my 'test new stuff and take screenshots' time. Still, some cool crap happened this week:

  • Registration for the fifth annual Open Source Security Summit is open and the agenda is posted.
  • NethSecurity, the OpenWRT-based firewall brought to you by the same individuals that make NethServer, has released version 8.2. I still haven't gotten around to testing this yet, but rest assured, I will do so soon.

  • Speaking of NethServer, they've also dropped NethVoice, a PBX for NethServer 8.

  • Fedora Magazine has an article about installing Viseron, a self-hosted network video recorder. It seems to have plenty of great features, especially for business, including object detection, motion detection, face recognition, and license plate recognition. I've never used it, but it definitely sounds worth checking out.

  • ProtonVPN has made its Firefox and Chrome extension available for users on their free tier.

  • ParadeDB, a "modern Elasticsearch alternative built on Postgres" dropped a blog post about why they picked the AGPL. Good read, and thanks for picking an open source license!

  • OpenProject, an open source project management project, has released version 14.4.0 with dark mode! It offers integration with Nextcloud, Sharepoint, Github, and Gitlab.
